I can imagine that you are thinking: How do I put my mind at ease in front of the camera. Or how do you break the ice? These are also questions that I myself wondered. These were also questions that many other customers but also other photographers asked me. So I started thinking about it and will share my findings and experiences with other photographers.
The first thing that naturally occurred to me was of course that it is mainly people who have never or hardly been in front of the camera. No experience so. But is that really true? Especially nowadays, where everyone has a cell phone, we are more often behind and in front of the lens. But in one way or another, we feel differently. But I thought that I also get people behind the camera who have a lot of experience like a model. In this group, it is often not difficult to make them feel comfortable. Usually, a word change is enough ... but not always.
But I can say that it is mostly the group of inexperienced people, the people without experience for the camera, like you, who have trouble to relax in front of the camera. The annoying thing about not being comfortable is that it can usually be seen in the photos. Sometimes it can be seen from the poses but often also on the face. That is why it is important for me as a photographer to give you a good feeling. To put you at ease. To give the feeling that it is familiar and that you have been doing this for a while. And I usually do this from two different perspectives: trust and atmosphere. I will build these two feelings directly with you so that you feel very comfortable and your confidence will grow before and during the photoshoot. But also long after.
1. Start building a connection
With me, a photo shoot is not simply shooting a few pictures. I call it an experience, an experience. It is precisely the experience and the pleasant time that we spend together at that moment. That is why I think it is very important to get to know each other a bit better first. That's why I start the photo shoot on time so that we can first talk to each other. But of course, I do this not only in a conversation for the photo shoot. It already starts. But during the make-up, interim dressing, between and during the photo shoot, I try to get as much contact as possible with you. It must be a pleasant experience and not a forced situation where you uncomfortably take a pose. That is why I really find contact making very important to build trust.
2. What am I doing
To put you at ease, I always tell you what I'm doing. What I'm photographing and why I pose you in a certain way. I also clearly state what I expect from you. In between, I show how it stands. Which pictures have already been taken and how well you are on it. In this way, the trust will also grow. You will notice that it gradually becomes easier to relax and feel at ease.
3. Listening is important
Listening to each other is very important. That's why I want you to keep talking and laughing during the photo shoot. You can and may also state things yourself. That is actually nice. Then I know what you expect from me and what you would like. After all, we create beautiful pictures together.
4. I like to prepare well
I have already prepared well before a photo shoot has started. That's why I like a small preview of the date of the photo shoot. Then we can already have discussed and decided a lot. I am mainly concerned with the location and, for example, clothing. We could make an emergency board ensure that we both create the right expectations. I will always make sure I know in which poses I would like to pose to you. Poses that suit you well. So that you do not only look good on the photo but that you pop out of it!
5. Let's keep it professional
Of course, it is a nice time during the photo shoot. But I do think that we both have to maintain a professional attitude. We know what the agreements are. We must also comply with that. We both ensure that we are on time for example. But also dressed and cared for. They seem very logical, but sometimes it seems to go wrong. In an introductory email, I make sure that it is clear to you what will happen around and during the photo shoot. Clarity ensures trust. And we want to promote that.
How do you create a relaxed atmosphere
1. Start with something easy
Of course, it always takes some getting used to at the beginning of the photo shoot. That is also no more than normal. That is even true with experienced models. However well prepared I have been. I always have to do some settings of my Camara, say fine-tuning. You still need some income in terms of posing. So we still have to scrutinize how we communicate with each other. We really have to make and take this time for each other. I always start with a few test photos and some simple poses. That way we talk to each other and you can turn a little hot. You have to see it as a process that certainly needs its time.
2. I also have to relax
It will be clear that when I am tense and reacted you will do that too. So I will also relax and explain everything quietly and if necessary poses arise. A bit of music in the background can also provide a relaxed atmosphere. If you like it, you can indicate in advance what music you like so that we play it during the photo shoot.
3. Full of positivity
I always try to create a positive atmosphere. Also, in the beginning, it may not be completely tasty or it was not in the beginning. The more positive I position myself, the more I will radiate that. The better that is for you. You too will notice this positivity and answer it positively. And when this positive atmosphere is created, the photo shoot can only become a success.
4. I will always take the time for it
More haste less speed. That certainly applies to photography as I like to do. When I am in a hurry, you will feel that as extra pressure. And that does not benefit the photos and your feelings. So I will plan everything well in time. In this way, we can take time for everything. That way, the atmosphere will only be even more relaxed.
When we go through these guidelines together and also carry out a photo shoot just can not go wrong. Time and time again I have noticed that this just works well. And things remain unclear, do you have any other questions? Then just contact me. I like to take great pictures with you and let you this experience never forget.
